I was also surprised that it's a Persian word, so i googled it :D
Yes apparently it comes from dulband which means turban: http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?search=tulip&searchmode=none
Now what i am wondering is that if it is derived from the Persian word dElband (not dUlband) and delband in persian means sweetheart (or literally= someone who is attached (band) to the heart (del)? hmmm?
oh and here's a bit of info i just learned while Googling 'tulip':
"The story goes that a prince named Farhad was love struck by a maiden named Shirin.
