The other man (2008)

Been a while since I enjoyed a drama, Liam was the reason I did not change the channel I admit, I'm biased to Liam Nesso.

Movie is about a "happily" married couple, after the wife's death "Laura Linney", the husband "Liam", discovers that she had another man in her life "Antonio Banderas"! Trouble comes in when the husband decides to know that other man closely and e-mail him from his dead wife's account, he gets so close to him and becomes his opponent in a chess game,,, ironic

A bit depressing and sad drama, yet sheds the light on an area in life, not many tackle nor discuss. Does digging the past bring out anything? Or change the way life is? Is killing the other man, a cure to all what he knew? Can one forgive such a thing, out of love? Does the point of view of the other (traitor) make a difference? Is there a justification for a double life? Why would anyone want to be the hidden part of someone's life?

Stranger than fiction [2006] - Effect review

This is not an ordinary movie review, it is a bit more spicy, it is about how a movie has moved and provoked a lot in me .... If you haven't seen the movie, this post is a HUGE spoiler!!

The story in short is about a man in this world called Harold Crick played by Will Ferrel, who finds out that he is a part of some novelist's new work! His life is being crafted by her, Kay Eiffel played by the Emma Thompson! He doubts his mental state until he was able to reach her, his aid to get some reason out of this case he's facing is Dr. Jules Hilbert played by Dustin Hoffman "who has  GREAT office in the movie, loved the windows although am fond of big ones but they were nice! OK now back to my review". The movie is very interesting with the idea and perspective of what if a person writes the life of another! leaving that other without a choice but to go along as they wrote. Eventually Harold gets the scrip Kay is writing and tells her that he likes it and doesn't want her to change it, although he knows he will die in her story. Then she decides to change the story ending to a happy one. The cherry on top for me and the most enjoyable part of the movie is the ending line said by Kay Eiffel:

Kay Eiffel: As Harold took a bite of Bavarian sugar cookie, he finally felt as if everything was going to be ok. Sometimes, when we lose ourselves in fear and despair, in routine and constancy, in hopelessness and tragedy, we can thank God for Bavarian sugar cookies. And, fortunately, when there aren't any cookies, we can still find reassurance in a familiar hand on our skin, or a kind and loving gesture, or subtle encouragement, or a loving embrace, or an offer of comfort, not to mention hospital gurneys and nose plugs, an uneaten Danish, soft-spoken secrets, and Fender Stratocasters, and maybe the occasional piece of fiction. And we must remember that all these things, the nuances, the anomalies, the subtleties, which we assume only accessorize our days, are effective for a much larger and nobler cause. The quote above is the most touching part of the whole movie, it sums up all the story and gives us a simple message that life, no matter how complex we make or see it, in the end it goes back to the simple basics! Happiness in life is not so hard, and hope is always there, we can see beauty or look away from it, it is our choice really :} 

So for the sake of a happy life that I wish everyone, notice the simple things in your life, take them for granted and appreciate them while you can.

من ابرز ما حضرت كان الفلم الوثائقي اللي تكلمت عنه في البوست السابق، و لعل من لم يحضر المسرحية سيجد نوعاً من عدم الفهم لمن هو ذلك "الريتشادر الثالث" الموجود في كافة البلدان، الا ان سياق الاحداث كفيل بإيصال الفكرة

الفلم الوثائقي يرافق مسرحية "سليمان البسام" في عروضها بدولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة و الولايات الأمريكية المتحدة، و على الرغم بأن كل منهما متحدة الا انهم لم يتحدوا بالطريقة او المكان ..

 

فعرض الإمارات على مدي يومين اختص بالليلة الأولى بشخصيات محدودة و "مهمة" الذي لم اتوقعه هو الصرامة التي واجهها العرض من حيث تواجد الرجال و التصوير، و العرض الثاني كان لطلبة و اعجبني ما قالوه و يتفق بشكل كبير بما رأيت في المسرحية حينما عرضت في الكويت

اما عرض الولايات المتحدة فقد كان اكثر سلاسة، لولا البروشور الذي كاد ان يودي باحد الممثلين إلى "الف داهية" ،، بروشور في المسرحية و عليه صورة احد الممثلين و مذكور انه ارهابي و مطلوب للعدالة، التقطه احد ورواد الفندق و سلمه للأمن، مما اثار الشكوك حوله و بعد التحري "جت سليمة" و بشكل عام ما اتضح في ذلك العرض هو السلاسة في التعامل

الممثلين و ردود افعالهم و تعليقاتهم هو ما لن استطيع ان اوصله لان بساطة تعابيرهم و ردود افعالهم عما حولهم من احداث في اوطانهم او بالدول التي سيتم عرض المسرحية بها، لا تقدر بثمن، و تعب الفنانين بتقديم المسرحية و الإعداد لها ، و تحديدا بشار و عليا عليه كسر خاطري، ممثل و هم يساعد الممثلين بالازياء و اللوية

تراوحت المادة ما بين ما يترسب بأذهاننا عن الغرب، واقعنا العربي، استفزاز الفن لعقولنا و يمنحنا صرخة توقضنا من سباتنا، و جمال الابتسامة العفوية و ذلك الجدال المستميت ليفهم البيروقراطيون ان الفن يستحق "الإستثناء" و التقدير، الفلم ككل كان خفيف و جميل بالنسبة لي على الرغم من خلو القاعة من اغلب الموجودين الا اني استمتعت

You don't know Jack

The movie is based on the true story of Dr. Jack Kevorkian an 82 year old American Doctor, who after his retirement, helped people to die. What he did is to seek out hopeless cases and help them to commit suicide as an escape from agony, with the help of friends and family. His combination of drugs to end the life's of people were painless as claimed & scientifically explained. How did he decide hopeless or not? By interviewing them and eliminating depression cases or the ones who are hasty , he was looking for non-curable cases who suffer from illness that prevents them from having a normal life. His claim was that everyone should have the right to end his own life. Of course, that idea was highly criticized in the US yet the law could only hold him countable for assisting in suicide! Also a lot from a religious point of view has opposed his ideas and actions.

He did not get jailed up until "Kevorkian allowed the airing of a videotape he had made on September 17, 1998, which depicted the voluntary euthanasia of Thomas Youk, 52, who was in the final stages of ALS" [via mighty wiki].

A movie that puts suicide , sickness , religion and believes at stake! Where the only derivative for whats happening is your emotions. So, do "feelings" justify suicide? Being desperate or hopeless is ok when the enemy is illness assisted by weak medicine?  The movie made me live in conflict, feeling sorry for the sick people in it had the big chunk of my compassion, I felt for them, understood their wishes to die. Also made me feel how in different shapes desperation comes, how hope is the ultimate light we have to hang on to. Pity on self is one big soul breaker, the idea to live depending on others is devastating, the whole movie was about ending souls and starting up your thinking.

Verdict? I understand them but I am still against suicide, quitting is not the best way to end life.

Amazing performance by Pacino as usual, he made me believe that he was Kevorkian :)

The Sunset Limited

The sunset limited is a TV movie, based on a play written by Cormac McCarthy. The movie is quite simple and the idea behind it is defiantly NOT limited. Its about two men, one saved the other from jumping in front of a train "The Sunset Limited" in NY - USA, both stand on opposite believes, one is religious "Black - Samuel L. Jackson" and the other is an atheist "White - Tommy Lee Jones", in a 90 minute dialogue set in a single place, Samuel's living room, the most remarkable conversation takes place. The movie is not for action seekers nor the ones who want a normal thought-less and more story oriented movie, its for who wants to see both views. It is a serious intellectual movie that tackles an issue man has struggled with from ages, the two characters sum up a realistic example of two modern views. Very worth seeing however if you are not into such "literal - mental" debates, do not watch it.

Both actors were amazing, they showed each view in a touching way, you can feel the agony and happiness of each, the believe and disbelieve. The movie does not answer questions, it merely displays two views, leaves blank areas to be filled by the viewer. The only unfair drawback on it for me, is the simplicity of one's education and literal ability VS the strength of the other. All in all it was enjoyable and planted a lot of questions and answers about both.

Unthinkable

Samuel L. Jackson was amazing! That being said now to the story. Unthinkable is a movie about "Steven Arthur Younger" an American who calls him self as Yousuf after converting to Islam played by Michael Sheen, shoots a video declaring that he put 3 nuclear bombs in unknown places in the US and had set them to detonate in a few days "I think 4?". All American forces join to find him, and bring the FBI agent "Helen Brody" Carrie-Anne Moss and "H" Samuel L. Jackson. 

Helen is an honest and very fair person, hard worker and goes by the book! H is a mysterious crazy man, empowered by the government to crack up the criminal Steven aka Yousuf to find the 3 bombs. I won't say more so I wouldn't spoil the movie, but the plot goes from torturing Steven in unthinkable ways, to seeing unthinkable reactions from people around. The movie away from the actual interesting story, it unfolds a lot about how far national security can push people to do to other people, how believing in something can make you strong, and how lying can effect morality, being lied to can push you to extreme limits! It might be annoying to some, but it was very interesting to me, on a human behavioral level. Watch the trailer.

Leap Year

The trailer was far more fun than the movie, yet it was an amusing watch.

Anna Brady who has been dating cardiologist, Jeremy, for four years and she expects him to propose to her on a dinner date but he gives her a gift instead! So her father reminds her of an Irish folklore tradition in Dublin! Where women on the February 29th can propose to men :} So the girl travels from the united states to the UK-Dublin to meet her boyfriend who is there for a congress, and in that trip she finds out what she wanted and has in her life! A sweet romantic comedy, that ends with her falling in love with the other guy, whom she hates.

Valentine's Day

I think it was a try to mimic the idea of Love Actually the idea of more than one love story/ relationship going on in the same time, at a single day of the year, this time it was Valentine's day! It was not bad but not that good, I wouldn't waste my time on it again.

Iron Man 2

Seen it a while back but I didn't quite get the time to write the review. It was amazing! as good as the first part, great action scenes, I was really afraid that it would disappoint me, since not a lot of movies were successful with their sequels as the first part is.

Stark is up for an other challenge with someone who developed a technology very close to the one used in Iron Man's heart core thing "the arc reactor" and with the challenge of the reactor keeping him alive to poison him! Long story short the movie is GREAT, I loved it :D

شنب - Mustache

The latest film by Miqdad Al-Kout, Mustache

Went to the screening in Cinemagic Saturday the 15th, luckily the weather was ok! They added some padding to the seats :D people who attend Cinemagic's screenings will appreciate the comfy seating as much as I did :>

The movie!

It runs for 15 minute or so, a very light short movie the film is inspired by the short story "Winged Sofa" by Thuraya Al-Baqsami, as mentioned in the group made by the director.

It revolves around the Mustache! And what it symbolizes in our community, how many count it as a main indicator for manhood. The main character does not have a mustache, and thrives to have one by doing what everyone thinks a man should do to be a "man". He carries out in creating a life, marrying, having kids, to get chocked with the fact that with all he did, his wife does not love him!

The thought of Male VS Man was VERY obvious and given great priority. Being a male is a biological thing, the definition of man gets attached by default to any "human" male, nevertheless, the meaning of a man is more vast and flexible in different cultures. Focusing on our culture, many consider a productive male who can have a wife, family, house is a man! Not giving much attention to the fact that in the end, he is just a human being :) Qualifying to everything that people think a man does, is not exactly a gate pass to everything, at least not the Bu Shanab's happiness! Or nice smell.

A simple sarcastic comedy by Miqdad Al-Kout, who again succeeds in attracting me with his crazy on and off sudden cuts in scenes! Where he moves you from one shot to the other all of a sudden, yet keeps you in the content, gets you so busy thinking "what does this scene mean?!" and then have a laugh or smile, to the extent you make sense out of the mess he's creating, making you lose focus on "when did the actor come out of the room and got into this corridor?" and focusing on the idea he's sending!

I enjoyed Mustache, and wish to see more from the young Kuwaiti directors. Well done Miqdad :]

The box

The box is an amazing mystery drama thriller movie. The story revolves around a couple who receive an anonymous box and if they pushed the button inside the box two things will happen; someone they do not know in this world, will die & they will be granted the amount of 1 million dollar.

Arlington Steward was my favorite character, Played by Frank Langella who did a GREAT job in this movie, he is the best character in my opinion I admire the fact that with the box every thing we are made of "morals, believes,, etc" is put against a test. A movie that made me think twice about everything around me, how much am I connected with every human being in this world, how sometimes being sorry is not enough and how ugly our choices can be, even if once they seemed to be good. The movie left me sad, upset and held a mirror in front of my face : How much can money seduce people?

PONYO

Yet another amazing piece of work from Hayao Miyazaki the writer and director of this movie. The original movie name in Japanese is (崖の上のポニョ, Gake no Ue no Ponyo - meaning : Ponyo on the Cliff) the plot is around the love between a tiny fish-girl "like" creature and a little boy. The movie is filled with Hayao's wit and symbolism, and again as in Princess Mononoky "but less intense" he holds up a mirror through his story and movie, in which he showed us how much humans pollute the sea and how the balance of the nature can be caused by a simple act.

Ponyo is an incredibly cute and enjoyable movie, we went to the 1.30 pm show and were very surprised to see that we are the ONLY ones over there, LOL! 3 seats only! sorry for the crappy picture but the others are worse lol, not sure what was on the lens though! it only appeared in this pic :/



We really loved Ponyo, mostly the cuteness of the characters really got into us :D Ponyo made us laugh on her spontaneity. I think Disney made a great investment in Hayao's work :)

New in town

A very predictable romantic comedy, New in Town with Renée Zellweger & Harry Connick Jr. as "THE" did it well. Renée as Lucy Hill is the big city executive who comes to the small business / town to fix things up and the rest is very known :) a nice movie to spend a thought-less evening, how ever not the best of the romantic comedies I have seen. I was impressed by how thin Renée is now but she looked older :/ hmm ,, anyhow its a 2 out of 5 movie.

The International

I'm a bit biased to Clive Owen, I love his acting although this actor did not take or play a proper role yet, I feel that he has a lot of potentials. The movie is about an Interpol agent who gets in too deep into financing weapons. It starts with the death of his partner that later on reveals a bigger game that he can not play fair. The movie was good but needed a sharper plot, when it came to half way I knew how will it end. All in all I enjoyed it, a nice movie to see and the plain Clive can act :)

AKS - عكس

AKS is a group of independent Kuwaiti film makers, lovely talents gathered in a rather odd name that stands up to get your attention, the small 3 letter word provoked my curiosity of why AKS in particular, yet I never thought of asking them why AKS, sometimes the charm in leaving some blanks here and there is enjoyable.

From the documentary Occupation 101 I knew about Cinemagics and since then started attending the screenings they hold, when ever I can, I must say it has been and is a great joy! In the future I will write more about it to promote such an amazing opportunity to see the art of movie making from all over the world and not only from Hollywood.

Last Saturday was a very special screening night, 4 Kuwaiti short movies were screened, it was an enjoyable evening and event, here goes my review of the 4 movies:

1. The Sniper - القناص : by Dawood Shuail

It's the shortest in run time, yet enjoyable, the story revolves around a sniper caught in a cat and mouse chaise, and it reminded me of "Enemy at the Gates" it was a very simple movie, it can be elaborated more I wished for it to be longer, but المخرج عاوز كده :) and I totally respect that and enjoyed the movie.

1. Hosha - هوشة : by Faisal Al-Duwaisan

Fisal Al-Duwaisan is a pro in photography I have seen his work in P2BK, and in many scattered places around the net. In Hosha the cinematography is amazing, you will be stunned of the level of professionalism and well use of light and technology! The trailer says a lot about that. The story is simple and touching, also an enjoyable movie.

1. Just Human - مجرد إنسان : by Omar Al-Masab

It's more like a preview of what is next in Omar Al-Masab trilogy of a trip to explore the human being, its a simple animated movie, all what you see is simple black and white sketches, a perfect color combination that diverts the attention to the ideas displayed, no distractions what so ever. My full judgment will complete when the trilogy does too, but I can say that I have high hopes in whats next. Me likey.

1. Banana - موز : by Meqdad Al-Kout

Is probably the longest in run time. The trailer is very simple compared to how complex the movie is and how controversial it was in the reviews from Kuwait and from the interview with the director in an Egyptian magazine. The performance of Nizar Al-Qandi, the hidden humble actor/artist with many talents, is very impressive, he played a part that took out a lot of his potentials out loud, and yes he can make you hate him, sympathize with him and not just laugh with him. Although its a short movie but it has a lot of depth in it, idea wise, symbolism was strongly used in it and many messages were sent with in the movie. Yes it's not easy for our community to accept such a movie but on the other hand he does display a lot of matters that are kept at the end in our list of interests! In the time with the consistent need for us to shed light on them instead of hiding them. I certainly enjoyed the movie very much.

About the controversy made by Banana I say that movies send a message! Some might say that when actors / directors describe their work as messages to the community, they really don't mean it! But I say yes most of them do, and Al-Kout certainly does! Art can make us think and provoke our community. We are human, we will never be prone to anything in this universe, one day we are very happy and every thing is clear, but what the next day hides is unknown and it can carry many contradictions to the one proceeding it! Opening up and discussing our problems, finding solutions is far more better than keeping them hidden, hiding will one day turn them into a tumor that will eat us up. The movie is not suitable for young people and is a wake up call to discuss rather than hide the problems any man or woman can face when confronting their sexual identity and needs, and some people among us and around us face that confusion and may get lost in the process of surrendering to the idea of tabooing any thing related to sexuality.

Last but not least, the above 4 movies participated in the Gulf Film Festival held recently in Dubai, it is worth noting that there are other Kuwaiti (co-Kuwaiti) movies that participated in the festival and the winners from Kuwait are:

The curious case of Benjamin Button

This is not an ordinary review, its a movie review with some thought into it, because The curious case of Benjamin Button made me think,, a lot :)

The movie is based on a short story as the mighty Wiki says. Simply revolving around an ordinary man captivated in a body that lives counter clock wise. He, Benjamin was born with a body of 80 years of age, then his life is plotted around the movie and as a movie lover I will not spoil it for others but I will list the important thoughts I came out with:

1. Age is just a number.
2. Turning back time will not change things, however cherishing every lovely moment and view is a thing not to be missed for it will only occur once in your lifetime :)
3. The external view of one is something very different from what they have inside.
4. Time is moving, all we can do is take pictures to remind us or rely on the blessing of memory to recall or forget things we passed by.
5. How simple things like the sounds of curtains can make a home feel like home, also how one can find beauty in the simplest things.
6. Love, once it hits you it will never leave you, no matter how hard life becomes.

Although I was not sure I want to go and see it in the cinema, I had the DVD, yet going to the movies is still a joy :) although movies are butchered by censorship it is still a joy for me, I like the cramped seats, dark all around atmosphere except for the screen light, the wide screen and loud sounds. Of course I couldn't help my self to notice the goofs in the movie like when he was with the English lady "Elizabeth Abbott" making tea, the level of tea in her estikana differs in a distracting way that annoyed me! I hate it when I notice little things and focus on them, I had to hardly remind my self that I should focus on what they are saying & the whole picture not a part of it, and I noticed some other stuff but they were minor.

A movie worth seeing, and thinking about.

Charlie Wilson's War

A great movie! It revolves around the role that Charlie Wilson played in the cold war between the US and the Soviet Union back in the 80's, the location of the war was in Afghanistan. The interesting mixture and conflict of interests caught my attention, it appeared to be a two birds in one stone issue with the downfall of the USSR along with the intervention of USA to be the savior knight to help the poor Afghans and hold the flag of justice in the other hand the war was funded by the efforts of Charlie Wilson and others. Tom Hanks was amazing :)

The movie is supposed to be based on a true story, but it had a lot of sense and historical documentation, at the time if it was not for the USA's arrangement the Russian ambition would have made our region's map very different! More over the best part for me was the dirty side effect of giving the Afghans munition with no restrictions, rules and not even a government! Things had an open ending, a real one that we lived and live till date. Afghanistan was and still is a victim of who wanted to invade it and those who helped. I liked this movie a lot, it was very honest, with some twists that were ok with me! this is Hollywood but all in all it was a very good illustration of how things happened and got us here.

Love in the Time of Cholera

How long would you wait for love?

Javier Bardem played the role of the lover Florentino Ariza, who in his youth laid eyes on Fermina and fell in love with her instantly, and kept on loving her for 52 years. I really shed tears when the movie came to its end, I enjoyed every bit of it, Javier was amazing! He performed Florentino perfectly. I still have the gap of how Fermina backed up on him, what made her think so little of a great feeling, of the first love!? I thought she would fight for him.

thoughts I hade right after finishing it:

+ Love has no age, its timeless, it is us who bare it in our loins or abandon it, the few faithful to love do exist, in this movie they did.

+ I recalled a phrase I once read in an e-mail where a father advices his son to marry the one he can talk to, because with time as they get older, it will be the only activity they will do and enjoy.

+ You don't have to be perfect to be loved, you just have to be loved by who wants you with all the flaws in you and beleives you are perfect in his/ her eyes.

+ Age is the number reflecting how many years we lived in this world, not by any way reflecting how old we are, nor how old our hearts are.

Our inner lives are eternal, which is to say that our spirits remain as youthful and vigorous as when we were in full bloom

I simply loved the movie! definetly added to my favorite movies list!!

Le Devorce (2003) - MBC4

After a long day for some reason I had the urge to cook! So I made me some macaroni with vegetables, olives and sun dried tomatoes, the result was not so pleasant but I liked the veggies next time will cook them alone, no need for the macaroni.


It was 10.30 I was done eating, I shuffled around the channels to find the latest hip and craze “Noor” show on MBC.4 so I tuned in for the heck of it, when it approached 11 I realized that I need to do something just before the Le Divorce starts. I tuned in a few minutes after the movie began, didn’t miss much.

Over all the movie was nice, it’s an old one, produced in 2003 but a nice one :) worth watching too, with the end of this movie my day should have ended but again! After a long day I found it difficult to sleep.

Which made me think, in the movie Kate Hudson “Isabel Walker” gets into a relationship where she is the temporary second woman in an older/ married man’s life, reminded me of my Airport story, and made me wonder, why did she went through this?

In the movie she had hoped that love will make it and he would have her as his life mate, not officially but at least in front of people who matter for them! He didn’t and obviously didn’t intend to, she was a beautiful cake that he enjoyed eating a slice from, and she knew it but was in denial.

Is love worth being sabotaged with the impossible?

I believe that love is a part of us, we make it happen, and it breeds on our feelings, without two it will not exist! And weather this love survives or not and gets an actual interpretation via social and personal bonds or not, the LOVE one feels is priceless, and a feeling I think no one should ever regret, even if it dies or was unfortunatly expressed with the wrong person. But why do women all the time get into impossible relationships? Instant border-free love is an exception for me, where people fall into it and cannot resist it, yet it is not fully guaranteed to last, nothing is in this life! But sometimes a he and a she go the distance to make their dream come true, I respect that very much.

What I wonder about is reasonable very mature women/ men who get into the situation where they know it will lead to a dead end, and one/ both of them are not willing to make a new ending that defies the dying one! ?





Is it the craving for love for the sake of love? or love for the sake of who made us feel love?

If we found a special someone, then love is worth the fight, isn’t it? That fight between what we want and what we can have is defined by the strength of our personalities and our believe in love. What I wonder about is : where is the mind in all of this? Why can’t we rule our hearts with our minds? Why didn’t Kate realize that to him she was a short amusement, and he was for her a crush that will leave a stain in her heart. As for love for the sake of it, it's another dilemma one enters with the risk of breaking people's hearts.

Wall-E

This is the second or third time we get to the cinema early :D an hour early today!

Wall-E was a lovely sweet cute movie, I could not believe how cute the robot was :D just as I expected the movie was not so interesting to me, not my taste BUT loved the animations/ story and Wall-E's cuteness. Like the movies based on Dr. seuss stories Wall-E had a great one! on how keeping the earth clean is a thing humans must commit to, the give and take relation between humans and earth is clearly stated all over the movie, and how robots who we see as machines can be more aware and loving than us. All in all its worth seeing if you want a cute simple movie.
