31 : A hell of a day!

I had a hell of a day at work,  had paper work to do then there was this new database that I had to test for validity for final usage and the whole thing was messy, I do not like to work with incompetent people nor those who ignore the end user comments. Will put up a good fight, as much as I can so at least we would work on a descent system.

30 : Taxi

29 : Grocery shopping

Stopped by to get a few things that mother and sister wanted, I only had 5 items in my shopping cart while all the people around me had either one FULL cart or two! I then realized that its the end of the month, then I started thinking, do people shop for grocery ONLY when they get their salaries? I've always seen that its an ongoing process at our house, a weekly if not bi-weekly house supply of food and other stuff. That way the load is not that big and the food is fresh, so why wait till your fridge/ house is empty then shop? If that's the case then its bad inventory planning and bad management for resources! BUT if people really lacked cash that much that they had to delay their essentials to the pay day then we have a more serious problem! poverty, even if it was bad management that got them to that stage, I still think that they are poor, not only financially but also educationally.

That's when a man in front of me told me to go to the express line and I told him, thank you but I don't have cash :) all of a sudden I got an angry look from the wife! I thought I didn't see properly she is probably not angry, we are allowed to talk to people around, aren't we? Then she left their empty cart in front of me and stood by the man till he finished paying then they went! leaving that empty cart in front of me!! I wouldn't kill them to move it, after all they did carry their stuff in it. It's just rude, so I called the worker to take the extra empty cart and finished what I was doing.

between the simple politeness gesture a man made the other day to move to an other chair just to clear out my vision of the screen @ the screening in cinemagics and the rudeness shopping cart couple/wife I realized that when someone is nice, they should be thanked, they are a blessing in this world and do leave you smiling till the end of your day.

28 : Art

27 : Kites

I simply love kites :) I spotted those today, they were set up from the inside of the Aqua Park. Had a little difficult time with the lighting set up, trying to be a little fancy and play around with the manual mode :p but I finally got some nice shots, far but nice :p

Sea Gull(s)

Stopped to take a few pictures by the sea side, saw a few people sitting here and there, some alone others with company. When I saw those two sea gulls, I thought about the people coming to talk to the sea, complain from life or happenings in their life to the sea, an idea adopted by humanity a long time ago "talking to the sea, that is". And I wondered are we gulling the sea or our selves?

Things in life do happen sometimes in a way we can not control or stop, but we can always act! We are the main derivative of change and through time human beings changed the course of history. Asking the sea what have you done to deserve this or that! Is a reversed question, you should ask your self what is going on! Think of the actions/ events/ happenings mostly upsetting you and brake them down, solve your problems, with the help of the presence of a lovely thing as the sea :)

And if you are MAKING your life messier you BETTER stop :] re-asses the situation and act towards what will make you happy. life is a circle, do not trap your self in a triangle.

26 : Keep Kuwait Clean, for a change!

As I was enjoying the natural plants that are fairly scattered here and there in Kuwait, I saw this broken soft drink glass bottle! And I wondered, why?! I really do not get the mentality of people who throw things on the floor, I think the easiest thing you can do in this world is clean up your self and for your self. Why leave your junk behind? I still recall my primary school principal asking us weather we would throw things in our house, of course the answer was no, so she said Kuwait is your home.

Change! Start from your self and people around you :)

:)

Article from Bazaar magazine

25 : Italian Water

From a regular blood test check up to bringing more plants, then ended up in True Value Al-Rai. Cafe Organica over there was cozy and quiet. While browsing the magazine and having small chats with mom, among a moment of silent she said:
I like this bottle of water!
Me: want us to take it?
Mom: YES, can we?
Me: Why not?

Asked the nice lady over there and she said sure, with a puzzled look :D then I told her that mother fell in love with it :p then the silence broke and she became more talkative with us :> And here we are, with a piece of Italy in our home, but the water wasn't as nice as the bottle looked :p

And yes water taste differs from brand to brand, in case you will comment like my sisters: its water, it shouldn't have a taste!

Project 365

Browsing around flickr found a loooot of interesting 365 Projects :> which is all about taking a picture every day for a whole year! The idea is big was and will be also, however the creativity of people doing it is nice :) some use an item/ figure to be their character along the project, others have real models, some go for random... I picked some of those for every one to see:

22 : Phone abuse

And here I am back to my SE-T700 after my I dropped my BB out of my pocket. A while ago I kinda messed things out with my BlackBerry, so now after I smudged it with mocha, filled it with rice, and worked out a fine for a bit, a while ago also there were some complications with the speaker and it was a simple clean up job. Now I broke the screen, I think by that I qualify to be the worst BlackBerry user. Will fix it for one reason to get the back up and then get me a new one. Although, the SonyEricsson T700 feels much more normal as a phone! I love to use a simple small neat phone, but I don't think I can get out of the BB circle yet. Also, the Bold is too big for me, so I need the time to think about whats next, and I might as well check the market and might, just might, ditch the BB thing... Who knows!

Mary Poppins

I've always seen the lady in the navy blue/ black coat fly with her umbrella scene across my life, in various channels but never got to see the movie Mary Poppins. Last night I did, thank you cinemagic it was a Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious night!

Footnote: The roots of the word have been defined as follows: super- "above", cali- "beauty", fragilistic- "delicate", expiali- "to atone", and docious- "educable", with the sum of these parts signifying roughly "Atoning for educability through delicate beauty". From the mighty Wiki :>

The sky is the limit! or not?

20 : Stone Grill

19 : Red Velvet Cake

Lately I have been fond of the "red velvet cake"! trying it all around :> Read about Mr. Baker's from His & Hers blog so I decided to give it a go. It was ok, but not as much of a killer! The November Bakery is still on the top of the list for me, then the Crumbs one, then Lorenzo's :>

Monday 18 January 2010

17 : Under the weather

According to the Dr. I am a little sick, but to me I feel OK! Anyhow I can not afford to get sick now, too much going on. The expression / phrase under the weather is weird, when I first heard it I was like
And wondered about the origin of this phrase, that expresses illness or not feeling well! Got this result online, don't know about its validity :>

16 : To keep or not to keep!

With all the fuss am going through to see whats to keep and what to not keep, the HUGE 18th issue of Thouq is one of my favorites, yet storing it is not easy! Because I want to keep my "likes" in my eye sight range, with a publication that big its not easy, where to fit it / put it?...... Final Verdict: Keep :)

PKN#4 - Kuwait City

I attended the Fourth Pecha Kucha Night - Kuwait City, Held in the Scientific Center Kuwait, Thursday January the 14th, 2010. The 20x20 presentations were done by "ordered by appearance that night":

Roa Al-Shaheen
Reham Al Sharif
Valerie Buchheit
Barrak Al-Babtain
Zed Alrefai
Alia Al-Ghunaim
Ahmad Al-Majed & Rabaa Al-Hajri
Maryam Al Hamad

And here are tidbits of the night ...

The arrival picture, I really loved the view and the spot they picked, whats better to enjoy in this weather than a green spot near the sea and the city in the same time!

The home screen :>

Roa Al-Shaheen
Interesting presentation by her and an insight to what you see VS what you believe in. EXCEPT for one thing! this woman wore this weird thing in front of us and took a few pictures which made me totally lose my focus on the slide show of Roa! And I was really annoyed that they did not even move away from us to take their pictures or wear that "thing" that kept my head wiggling right and left to see and focus what was the presenter saying! Let aside the talking in a loud voice and giggling

Little did I know that, she was the next presenter! And I still do not know why didn't she think of the people sitting behind her trying to enjoy a lovely and creative event?! :) and yes a little while effects! especially if we lost 3-4 slides, which is more than a minute in a 6.7 minutes show! Not against having fun, but please away from the public who are focusing on a show in front of them :) Also, out of respect to the fellow presenters she should have been more quiet to let us enjoy the show, as well as prepare to enjoy her show, I wonder if people did that in her presentation in front of her friends how would they react? As I was about to talk to her, she got up....

Reham Al Sharif
Between trying to track the head piece lady and to see her sit on the grass up front, when Roa's presentation was about to finish, "thinking why didn't she call her friend to take her picture away from the crowd or at least in the break time or at least out there before she presented or at least when she started presenting!" and trying to figure out the relation of the presentation slides and the trial to make her self an alien to reflect misconceptions we have, I tried to focus but I could not. honestly was too bothered by the time wasted from the presentation before.

Valerie Buchheit
What I love about people who have traveled across the globe and worked in different countries, is how they perceive humanity and civilization. Valerie shed the light on very humanitarian and personal experience that were very enjoyable.

Barrak Al-Babtain
A very talented, bright minded young man! In a simple slide show, he illustrated the errors we have in Kuwait's infrastructure! And not only pointed out the problem but also gave the solution! A very brilliant presentation and although started a little shaky but was very clear and well prepared presentation, except for !!!! tada the same group of people :) one of them was trying to tell a friend her location

So this slide and the one before were pretty much ruined for me! And yes I tried to move my head right and left BUT she kept on waving, I lost focus for a while! from a very nice presentation. Ok, this time I thought they could have: a- went to get the friend over. b- wave with the phone, since its bright and the area was dark so they would see her. c- she could have thought of the people behind her and tried to figure out a "c" of her own :> Again am not against having fun, but lets all have fun and not bother others, please!

Zed Alrefai
needless to praise his experience holding up the Kuwaiti flag up on the top of Mount Everest, his web page, being the first Arabian to do so :> When we knew about it long ago back in 2003, we were and still are very proud of him. I will be unfair if I did not talk about every picture, since each held a lot of his experience and he spoke about it in the best way and was funny too :)

Alia Al-Ghunaim
A lovely, classy architect who designed Bayt Abdullah as her graduation thesis, the whole project is being built with the donations of people that KACCH is trying to gather. The name Abdullah has a story:

The proposed children's hospice for Kuwait was inspired by a young boy called Abdullah who returned to Kuwait following treatment in London for neuroblastoma. After lengthy hospital stays and often painful procedures there was eventually no further treatment possible that would offer hope for a cure.

Abdullah's mother promised him that he would never again have to stay in a hospital.

In 1989, after attending a series of lectures organised by KACCH on children's perceptions of death and dying, Abdullah's mother approached KACCH, and it was agreed that they would help her take care of her little boy at home. Abdullah died in her arms at home just before his fifth birthday.
Witnessing Abdullah and his family's courage and determination to live as normal a life as possible in the face of his approaching death, encouraged KACCH to work towards the provision of similar

care for other children in Kuwait who are terminally ill. A children's hospice has now been designed to give those children the specialised care they need, ensuring peace and dignity at the end of their short lives, and provide their families with support and comfort in their bereavement. It will be called “Bayt Abdullah” in memory of Abdullah and his family.

May the dream come true, and many thanks go to Alia for designing such a lovely place, that she explained floor by floor.

Ahmad Al-Majed & Rabaa Al-Hajri
The spoke about their experience in being in a triathlon and explaining what is it :) And their plan to introducing this sport to Kuwait, with the 3 Club. A triathlon is basically a race with three phases, all done by the same athlete. Swimming, Cycling and lastly Running! Such an ability to be a competitive in three sports in one day is amazing, the fitness required for it is big, yet achievable by anyone, even in Kuwait! the 4 above are living proof for it. Ahmad & Rabaa did a great job in introducing this sport and shedding the light on their participation in "The Garmin Barcelona Triathlon". Well done :>

Maryam Al Hamad
She spoke about her experience in the K4K project initiated and run by LoYAC. Also like Valerie,  her experience with an other culture touched me, especially the children of Kenya. By building a school kids were very grateful and the people over there too, a simple right a child has in our lovely country, there it was a dream. Education and health are the most two noble gifts anyone can offer. Thank you Maryam and the people in LoYAC for this project.

Pecha Kucha is a lovely event :) introduced by Dr. Aseel Al-Ragam, many thanks goes to her and ALL the organizers you guys did an amazing job to make this event a bright star in our cultural agenda. THANK YOU :>

GulfRun 5

And the GulfRun is back :> The car show is ongoing till tomorrow, in 360 mall, Friday15th & Saturday16th of January 2010, from 10am - 10pm

For those who dont know what is GulfRun, it is:

"The GulfRun was first created in 2005 by a group of young Kuwaitis' who wanted to practice car racing in a professional and secure environment. They wanted to avoid street racing, reduce car accidents, and prevent spreading fear among public, therefore, they rented the world renowned Bahrain International Circuit to be able to achieve their goal, strengthen their driving skills and learn the capability of their cars.

Three years later the GulfRun has evolved into an annual friendly racing competition. Under the guidance of professional-racers and instructors, racers are able to push their cars to the limits in a regulated and secured environment. At the Bahrain International Circuit, full safety will be emphasized as multiple instructors will be present along with a full safety staff, commonplace in F1 races."

More info about the event is in their website.

15 : Desktop background

A few days ago I was playing around with my new cam in my room and I noticed that one tulip lost a petal and as I was sadly looking at it, I looked inside! I discovered a lovely scene, the mixture of yellow and white was amazing, here is the above picture in flickr.  And this is how my early macro trial picture went to be the background for my desktop, a change from the usual outsourcing from pixel girl presents :)

14 : At night

Even the most regular things look different at night :) got the shot when trying to shoot a clear night scene for this dhow at the scientific center, after having a lovely evening in Pecha Kucha Night # 4

13 : Don't imitate! Innovate

Seen in a shop down town Kuwait, in the building opposite to Souq Al-Safat. when I saw this weird man-looking, somewhat scary! figure, made of paper and the scribbles on it, I immediately laughed :D and in the same time, comparing it to the other shops around he did innovate! The story of my admiration of the phrase I chose for the title came from the 1999 Hugo Boss perfume campaign which I still do love to say every once and a while! So back to the tiny stationary store, the store owner was pretty happy with my photo shoot and told me that there is a girl figure inside also, I could not go in and see it we were in a hurry, but I told him that his way of advertising is very nice and unique.

Regardless of the crappy shape, cheap material used, he did have a good idea and stood out there among his peers :]

11 : Pencils

I still love using pencils, for some reason they are more fun! not practical but fun to use, and I love the fact that you can have many degrees of line thickness and also color, by just holding it down firmly or a little loosely on the paper :} And Jennifer Maestre did more with pencils than we think!

10 : Love!

Macro trial!

A few days ago I received a broadcast thru bbm, asking :

Define LOVE from your point of view? & Why we need love in our lives?

The easy part was to explain why I think love is needed in life, I wrote We need love to enjoy life without it everything is plain, like the tulip above and its fresh friends who just got into my room, brought me joy by their existence, only. The surprisingly hard part for me was to define LOVE, I wrote love is a feeling, that goes beyond your mind & soul :) & makes you enjoy what you feel it towards. So I kinda repeated my self there, to define love by the reason its important to us, so I do not think I defined love really! I just identified a crucial character of love. The only thing related to it is that I think its beyond mind and soul.

So any way, what is love?

9 : Up!

As I was leaving Jabriyah I spotted this wheel excavator on top of a building! I wonder how did they get it up there?!

From here and there

In business, errands or any kind of mission you have to accomplish, Delegation is a powerful tool to save you time and effort on some regular and less important issues. BUT the main rule is, you delegate a task and not the responsibility! Hence, you're still responsible for the safety/ cleanness of clothes that come from the laundry and the correct amount paid, even if someone else did that task for you.

Alma's short film, a lovely animation that I knew about from Blasha's twitter. The movie was nice but very sad! loved the character and how naughty she was.

7 : Furniture hunting

Taken from above, Banta. Evening plan interrupted by family to go and hunt for some complimentary stuff needed for the annual renewal for the house! It is a very joyous time for my mother :> The part that I enjoy in this whole process is space management, I soon will need my space management skills to rearrange & decorate my room, stuff are piling up I need to organize my mess.

6 : Al-Maidan Cultural Center

I forgot the time! I was about to forget the picture thing for today :p

Attended a musical event at Al-Maidan Cultural Center, which is a part of Dar Al-Athar Al-Islamiyaah. Interesting events are held there in each cultural season, will try to post about those events in time :>

Although the main reason to attend is to listen, I was swept away with seeing! I could not resist the urge to notice what the performer's gestures and movements were, and also the audience's. I enjoyed how spontaneously some of the people in the event react to music, it is an art that goes beyond the language as a medium to express feelings.

*An "n" slipped and was noted by جبريت, thank you :>

5 : DAI

DAI stands for Dar Al-Athar Al-Islamiyyah, a cultural institution that offers a lot to Kuwait's cultural agenda :)  I love their events and I got the chance to see and learn a lot because of their events. Today I went to renew my subscription, which gives me the following benefits:
  • DIA publications
  • The schedule for the cultural season
  • E-mail notification of all the events
  • Attendance of exclusive to members events, however most events are open to all
  • 10% discount on the gift shop
The biggest benefit is attend the cultural events and get to know and see more of this world. I have been delaying the subscription renewal forever! Glad I finally did it today. I simply love Dar Al-Athar's work and I am thankful to the great chances they give us to enjoy activities other than the usual : "shopping, dining, coffee slipping, hanging out" type of stuff :>

*picture taken with the assistance of my finger :p to cover the flash, hence the red'ish effect

4 : Memories

When ever I travel I try as much as I can to get nativity made things from any country I visit. National products are more valuable that exported goods when it comes to souvenirs. Although I did not use most of them, yet I still love to keep them.

3 : numb3rs!

I'm a numbers geek, I cant help to notice special numbers, like the above series of the same number in all the 6-digits my car's mileage reached. I always prefer even numbers! so if you add up the ones up there, you will get 6 ,, EVEN! Also, can't help the habit of relating the numbers in car plates to each other! figure out a formula to memorize them.

This exhibition was held on the 1st and 2nd of December '09 when it traveled from Derwazat Abdulrazzaq pedestrian subway to Safat Square at Kuwait City. it is a photography exhibition that acts as an observational phase of a further architectural study on placement and displacement thus evaluating facades patterns designed during the 1960s to anticipate visions on urban planning.

The exhibition will be held at sultan gallery on Tuesday 5th of Jan 2010 at 7pm. It will showcase the photographs along with videos of the two days exhibition in Kuwait city.

Hope to see you there!

2 : For the love of chocolate!

One of the most practices outing in Kuwait is going to coffee shops! Life with Cocao is a new one in 360 Mall, their chocolate fondant cake was good :] It is said that chocolates effect our mood :

"Substances found in chocolate, such as phenylethylamine, theobromine, anandamide and tryptophan trigger mood enhancing chemicals and neurotransmitters to be released in the brain. Phenylethylamine is a chemical found in the body that is similar to amphetamine. It helps mediate feelings of giddiness, attraction, euphoria and excitement" Source

I can never explain my love for chocolate, its simply a good taste to experience and enjoy :} even when dieting I can not deprive my self from eating it, with reasonable amounts that is and cutting back on eating in other meals.

1 : The equipment

I recently got the Canon G.11 and will put it into action, along with the aid of my Nikon Coolpix L20 which I got for the AA-Battery feature :> my mobile cam, and MAYBE if fixed my Nikon Coolpix S550 which lost its focus for an unknown reason, in a very far far away land. I just started reading the manual to know how to get the most of my canon. Usually reading manuals is VERY HARD for me, I hate it, but its a must if I want to seriously take some good pictures.

This is the first post in the series of posts containing pictures of my 2010 :> a thought I had in mind for a while and I decided to start with it here, in my blog instead of a new blog for this purpose, and used the Labels feature for that reason, named its label as "2010 in pictures" for easy access to this project. I hope I commit to it!

Its called TUZKI

A few months ago I received an animated illustration of a cute thing dancing around and making crazy stuff :p today I knew that its a rabbit and its called TUZKI. created in 2006 by Wang Momo (the pictures above are from his blog).
